Evolution of my pencil drawings

In this platform ,I'm sharing with you some procedures I use in creating my works. Kindly follow the images below you will find out the tools and how I used them to render each section of this very portrait.

Step by step

Let’s talk about how I do my works!

Sketch HB / 2B

Stage 1

Stage 1

I start my wok by sketching fully every detail with the HB or 2B graphite pencil. I focus much on precision, using outlines to separate my tonal values which makes it easier for me to shade.

Compressed charcoal

Stage 2

Stage 2

Normally, I make a halfway shading from the face which is the skin before i render the hair but in this case I eventually mixed up the process; so this  time I’m shading part of the hair with soft compressed charcoal block.

Charcoal blender

Stage 3

Stage 3

Still with the hair, after shading with compressed charcoal block I then smudge with a tool I called “charcoal blender” it made of foam. It has double tip which help me to have a fine smooth texture.

Mono Zero Eraser

Stage 4

Stage 4

After I’m done smudging or blending, I then create my hair strains with the mono zero eraser to bring out the highlights on the hair.

Brush / Graphite Powder

Stage 5

Stage 5

I work with varieties of blending tools but in this photo what you see there is soft Blending brush, I use that to spread graphite powder evenly.

Faber Castell pencil 2B

Aside the graphite powder, I also use my 2B graphite pencil along side the tortilon for certain intricate areas.

Compressed charcoal block

Stage 7

Stage 7

Usually compressed charcoal block is one of the medium I use to render hair in my works.

I go by hatching the areas which has more dark then I leave the portion for highlights.

Blending foam

Creating smooth texture with blending foam.

I blend all over including the portion left for highlights before creating the hair strains.
